Description

Grooved Steel Pipe

Grooved pipe is a type of pipe with a special design for pipe connections. Its main feature is that a circular groove is machined into the end of the pipe, allowing it to be connected to another pipe using specialized grooved fittings (such as grooved couplings and grooved connectors), without the need for welding or threaded connections.Grooved pipes are widely used in fire protection systems, HVAC, water supply and drainage, industrial piping, and oil & gas auxiliary systems.

Manufacturing Process of Grooved Steel Pipe

The production of grooved pipe follows a strict quality-controlled process to ensure dimensional accuracy and groove consistency.

  Manufacturing steps:

1.Raw Material Selection:High-quality carbon steel or stainless steel pipes are selected, commonly conforming to ASTM A53, ASTM A106, or equivalent standards.

2.Pipe Cutting:Pipes are cut to required lengths using precision cutting equipment to ensure square ends.

3.Groove Forming:Pipe ends are grooved by cold roll grooving or cut grooving machines, forming a uniform and accurate groove profile without damaging pipe integrity.

4.Surface Treatment:Depending on application requirements, pipes may undergo:

5.Black finish :Hot-dip galvanizing, Painting or epoxy coating

6.Inspection & Testing:Groove dimensions, pipe OD, wall thickness, and surface quality are inspected. Pressure and sealing compatibility are verified when required.

7.Packing & Delivery:Pipes are bundled, capped, and packed for safe transportation.

How are Roll Grooved Pipes and Cut Grooved Pipes Different?

  Roll Groove

Roughly 90 percent of pipes grooved today utilize roll grooving technology due to the ease of the grooving process while maintaining optimal joint performance. The pipe can be roll grooved in 30 to 40 seconds per square inch compared to one minute per inch using a cut groove. The roll grooving process also removes the need for cutting oil and the hassle of cleaning up the metal shavings that are removed from the pipe during the cut grooving process.

  Cut Groove

While roll grooving is very popular, the tried and true cut groove proves very useful in many situations. For example, if the pipe wall is too thick, cut grooving is an option. Or if the pipe is internally lined or coated, cut grooving is recommended to keep the integrity of the lining and coating. Even the pipe material can dictate the groove style, with some material of pipe needing to be cut grooved, such as ductile iron. Regardless if you choose to roll groove or cut groove, Shengtian Group offers a solution to your pipe joining needs
